Two Records in Three Nights: Nebraska Sweeps Creighton, Aces Out North Carolina
Husker fans, two home matches this week, two records.
No. 1 Nebraska swept No. 20 Creighton 25-13, 25-15, 25-19 on Wednesday at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Then on Friday it beat No. 25 North Carolina 25-14, 20-25, 25-21, 25-10 at John Cook Arena at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The Huskers are 9-0.
Wednesday: 15,405, and Creighton hit negative
The crowd was the story before the first serve. 15,405 fans made it the largest indoor home crowd in Nebraska volleyball history. The old mark was 13,870, against UCLA at the Devaney Center in 2009.
The Huskers gave them a clinic in defense. Creighton hit -.033 for the match, its lowest of the season. It had 17 kills and 20 attack errors.
The surprise lift came from the middle. Kenna Cogill, the sophomore middle blocker, had a career-high eight kills on 11 swings with no errors. That’s a .727 hitting percentage, and she put away match point herself. Andi Jackson led the team with nine kills, and Bergen Reilly had her third double-double of the season, 33 assists and 11 digs.
Jackson, a senior, spent part of her postmatch press conference talking about her teammate instead of herself.
“What she did was really hard,” Jackson said. “Learning that you’re playing right before the match, not a whole lot of time to mentally prepare.”
And on a rivalry where Creighton has never won but keeps forcing fifth sets:
“The first five points, we wanted to make a statement.”
Cogill said she remembered looking around that arena as a redshirt last year and telling herself she’d play there one day.
“Just thinking back on that today, it was just super cool.”
Nebraska is now 25-0 all-time against the Bluejays.
Friday: 13 aces, and a set that got away
North Carolina gave Nebraska a real match for two sets. The Tar Heels ran off five straight points late in the second, took it 25-20, and led the third 12-8.
Then the serving took over. Nebraska finished with 13 aces, a new record at the Bob Devaney Sports Center (and the most by the Huskers in any match since 14 against Alabama A&M in 2005!). Nobody carried it alone: Laney Choboy, Olivia Mauch and Teraya Sigler had three aces each. Four came in the fourth set, where Choboy served two during a run to 9-1. Nebraska hit .714 in that set.
Harper Murray led with 12 kills on .346 hitting. Jackson added 10 kills on .571, and Ryan Hunter came in for two sets and put down six kills on seven swings.

Murray moved into eighth on Nebraska’s rally-scoring-era career kills list on Wednesday. Two nights later she passed Lauren Stivrins for seventh.
