Eight Kills on Ten Swings: Teraya Sigler Only Needed One Set

Husker fans, sometimes a match is decided before most people have found their seats.

Nebraska swept DePaul on Friday night in Chicago — 25-19, 25-13, 25-15 — and the whole thing was settled by what happened in the first twenty-five points.

Teraya Sigler played one set. That was plenty.

Here is the line: eight kills on ten swings.

In one set. Then she was done for the night.

Nebraska hit .607 in that opening set. Not for a stretch, not on a run — for the whole set. Sigler had three straight kills to push the Big Red in front 16-13, and she finished it herself with the kill on set point.

Ten swings, eight kills, two blocks. Some nights the box score just tells you.

Kenna Cogill’s first career start, and nobody blocked more

This is the one to remember.

Kenna Cogill made the first start of her career and led everybody in the building with seven blocks. She added four kills. In the third set she had a kill to stretch the lead to 15-12, and she was in on the block that put Nebraska at match point.

First start. Match-high in blocks. That will do.

The rest of it

Harper Murray led the Huskers with 11 kills, and added six digs, two blocks and a pair of aces — the most complete line on the floor.

Ryan Hunter put up five kills on .571 hitting with three blocks, and had the run in the third that broke it open. Manaia Ogbechie added four kills and two blocks, Skyler Pierce three and two.

Behind them: Campbell Flynn with 16 assists, eight digs and two kills across two sets, Bergen Reilly with 13 assists in the first, and Olivia Mauch with a team-high 11 digs.

As a team Nebraska hit .434 — a season high. DePaul hit .060.

The Huskers are 4-0.

And yes, another building

Friday’s crowd was 8,786, a DePaul volleyball attendance record.

We wrote about this three days ago when it was seventeen. Make it eighteen — eighteen times in the last four seasons that a program has set its all-time attendance record on a night Nebraska came to visit.

At some point that stops being a nice note and starts being the business model.

Sunday, the ballpark

Missouri. Wrigley Field. 8 p.m. on FOX.

Volleyball has never been played there. It will be on Sunday night, and the first-place team in the country is one of the two on the floor.
