Vegas in January: Nebraska Flag Football's First Known Date Is Championship Weekend

Husker fans, when we wrote about this team in August, the last thing the university said was that the 2027 schedule would come later in the fall.

Well — here’s one date. And it is not a quiet one.

Nebraska will play in the first-ever CFP Flag Football Showcase at the Las Vegas Convention Center, January 22-24, 2027, the College Football Playoff announced. The event runs in partnership with iFlag, and it is the first time the Playoff has put flag football on its championship weekend.

Now look at what happens three days after it ends.

The CFP National Championship is Monday, January 25, at Allegiant Stadium. In Las Vegas. Nebraska’s newest team will be playing in the same city, on the same weekend, as the biggest game in the sport.

This is the part worth sitting with.

Nebraska is in the varsity division. The teams alongside it: Manhattan University, Eastern Michigan and Cal Poly.

Here is the club division: USC, Cal, Oklahoma, UCLA, Arizona and Arizona State.

Six programs you would happily call blue bloods, and every one of them is in the club bracket. Nebraska is not.

That is what going first looks like. Nebraska made flag football its 25th varsity sport in January — the first Power Four school in the country to do it — and nine months later it is the reason the Huskers are seeded into a different division than USC and Oklahoma.

There is a whole festival around it

The showcase sits inside CFP Fan Central, and admission is free.

Games, clinics, pep rallies, special guest appearances, autograph signings and exhibits celebrating college football — three days of it, open to anybody who walks in.

If you were already thinking about Las Vegas that week, your newest Nebraska team is now a reason to go.

What we still don’t know

The rest of it, honestly.

The full 2027 schedule has not been released, so we cannot tell you yet whether Las Vegas is the first time this team takes the field or whether something lands before it. We do not know the format Nebraska will play in the varsity division, or who it draws first.

What we do know is that a program that has not played a single competitive down — sixteen players, eleven of them transfers, coached by Liz Sowers and her twin sister Katie — has been invited to the sport’s biggest weekend before its first season starts.

Husker fans, the schedule is still mostly blank. But the first thing written on it says Las Vegas, and that is a fine way to begin.
