The national midseason list for college football’s top punter just got a Husker name on it.

Nebraska announced Thursday that sophomore punter Archie Wilson was named to the Ray Guy Award Midseason Watch List by the Augusta Sports Council. Nominees were judged on overall stats, with the emphasis on net average, punts inside the 20, and punts that never come back.

From weekly honors to midseason

Wilson was already the Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week earlier this week. That followed his Ray’s 8 nod for Week 9 after the Washington game, his second Ray’s 8 of the season after Week 6 against Indiana.

Weekly lists. Now the midseason watch list. The leg keeps showing up.

The Washington tape that got him here

Against Washington, Wilson punted five times and averaged 49.8 net yards. Four of the five landed inside the UW 20.

All five went at least 40 yards, including a 59 yarder and a 60 yarder. Washington didn’t return a single one.

The season numbers

Wilson is averaging 45.1 yards per punt. That’s 21st nationally and third in the Big Ten. He’s put 14 of his 31 punts inside the opponent’s 20, and only four of the 31 have been returned.

Nebraska ranks 12th nationally in net punting at 43.4 yards per kick and 17th in punt return defense.

Next up

Nebraska travels to Illinois on Friday, Nov. 6. Kickoff is 7 p.m. CT on FOX and the Husker Sports Network.

Husker Nation, Wilson is on the Ray Guy midseason watch list. Does Champaign keep him there?
